Presented and curated by Hong Kong Arts Centre, Co-presented with The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) and The Chinese Canadian Photographic Society of Toronto, supported by The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto), Transformative Chic - The Everlasting Cheongsam Exhibition serves as a window to give the viewers a glance of the unique charm and transformative nature of cheongsam – an Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) entity and a symbol of the culturally rich city of Hong Kong. It is also a showcase of the creativity of Hong Kong fashion designers who have revitalised this ‘timeless’ cultural icon and make it relevant to the contemporary world. Not only has cheongsam survived the history, but has continued to become the trendy fashion of our daily life in Hong Kong and across the globe.

Cheongsam is one of the most fascinating ICH entities found in Hong Kong. Also known as “qipao”, cheongsam is originated from the traditional Manchu costume which was introduced to China nation-wide after the establishment of the Qing dynasty. Cheongsam has been modified over generations, and it is still evolving in Hong Kong in the good hands of different contemporary designers.

The 9 Hong Kong designers and groups, namely Grace CHOI, Janko LAM, Kenny LI, Mary YU, Mountain YAM, Polly HO, Ranee KOK, Blind by JW and Cantosoul (Jasmine CHEUNG) will showcase their endless inspirations of innovative designs cheongsams at the exhibitions. Online sharing (Live) and Online Workshop (Live) will be arranged during June 5-13, 2021, with more information stated as attached and as follows….

About Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC)

Hong Kong Arts Centre - Art for Passion, Art for Life, Art for All

Since 1977, the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) has been a platform for nurturing and supporting artists, and infusing art into everyday life. Its unique arts and educational programmes aim to make the arts accessible for all.

The HKAC believes in the transformational power of art for people from all walks of life. Established for more than four decades, the HKAC endeavours to bring arts to the people of Hong Kong – by presenting programmes for visual arts, performing arts, moving images and media arts, comics and animation. Our other areas also cover arts education, conferences, festivals, public art and community projects. All with the vision and mission of engaging and inspiring creativity in the Hong Kong community.

In 2000, HKAC founded its education arm, Hong Kong Art School (HKAS). The HKAS provides award-bearing programmes to nurture artists and art practitioners, as well as short enrichment courses for the general public.

The HKAC aspires to engage everyone in the community to become an active participant in the arts - as an enthusiast, an artist or a patron.

In 2022, the HKAC will celebrate its 45th anniversary. Let’s continue to embrace ‘Art for Passion, Art for Life, Art for All’, and share the inspiration.
