“2019: Centenary of the Bauhaus movement!” For the past 100 years, this world-renowned German art school has greatly influenced architecture, graphics, interiors and even typography. For example, computer and cell phone giant Apple and Japanese lifestyle brand Muji have been inspired by Bauhaus with their ‘less is more’ philosophies. Several famous painters such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee taught at the Bauhaus school, as did master architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The Bauhaus style that they advocated not only represented a utopian vision of design, but also pioneered the idea of design functionality, offering art and design, which had hitherto been the purview of the ruling elite, to the masses with such minimalist yet functional furniture as the Barcelona Chair and the Brno Chair. The three Bauhaus buildings located in Weimer, Dessau and Bernau are now listed as UNESCO world heritage sites, further cementing their place in the history of design. Featuring interviews with numerous scholars and contemporary artists, BAUHAUS SPIRIT: A 100 YEARS OF BAUHAUS uncovers the illustrious history of the movement and showcases the lively and unique teaching style of the Bauhaus school, and in the process reveals the inter-connectedness between different creative disciplines and design and demonstrates how Bauhaus continues to inspire architecture, art, design and even modern theatre 100 years since its founding, for the genius of Bauhaus lies in its ability to continually shape our society to this day.
