Meet the Artist on Farming

Farming has a long tradition in human civilization. Monti treats farming as art and incorporates it into her artistic practice. From growing rice on roadsides to building a garden with cultural plants in a 400-year old village, she explores the relationship between human, art and the environment. In this talk, Monti will share with you her recent art projects and her journey of creation.

Speaker: Monti Lai (Environmental Artist)

After graduation from the BA programme co-presented by Hong Kong Art School and RMIT University, Lai received her MA degree from Aalto University in Finland majoring in environmental art. She is now based at Lai Chi Wo Village exploring the same subject with farming practice whereas paddy rice planting in particular. Her works ranging from site-specific environmental installation to drawing and participatory art, collaborating with various local and oversea organizations and schools. Recently, Lai sets up the “Farmside Art Research Lab”, inviting artists and professionals from different disciplines to work together in generating new idea and concepts on how art intervenes the debate on land, ecology and culture conservation. In addition, it aims at promoting environmental art to the general public.

Ms. Sophie Hu obtained her MA degree from Boston University. She is a provider of Art Appreciation and Investment courses for brands such as Cartier, Blancpain and The International New York Times. Before joining the Centre, Sophie was in charge of curriculum, lectures, and developing collaborations with art institutions at Christie’s Education Asia. She has also designed programmes and lectured for the EMBA class of China Europe International Business School (CIEBS) and Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB). Sophie is now the Development Director (Art Learning) of Hong Kong Arts Centre.

Ceramic - From Traditional to contemporary, from functional to conceptual

Ceramic, one of the most popular art mediums since ancient time, has developed its own language in the contemporary culture. In this meet-the-artist session, Joe will share his path of becoming an artist and the way of associating ceramics with different elements such as sound, space, new media and 3D printing with audience, bringing out the new possibilities of this traditional material.

Speaker: Joe Chan Kiu Hong (Part-time Lecturer, HKAS)

Obtained his MFA degree from The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, Chan is currently a part-time lecturer at Hong Kong Art School. He is devoted into finding out the possibility of interdisciplinary collaboration between ceramics and other types of elements, such as sculptures, installations, environment as well as sound. His artworks have been showcased internationally.

Artist-led Visit for Children

Art should be available to people from all classes and all walks of life. It is also one of the most essential spiritual enjoyments to humankind. Collaborating with Order of Malta Hong Kong, a group of children who are confronting with different hardships in life will be invited to visit the Art Basel exhibition. Thereafter, artist Jaffa Lam will share her story about growing up with art to this group of children, aiming this eye-opening moment can enlighten their insight.

Speaker: Jaffa Lam (Academic Head, HKAS)

Jaffa is a sculptor specializing in large-scaled site-specific works of mixed media sculptural installations, which are mainly made with recycled materials. In recent years, she has been involved in many public sculptural and community projects in Hong Kong and overseas. Her works often explore issues relating to local culture, history, society and current affairs, some of the topics include art in public, the loss of craftsmanship in the city, and the regeneration of art making cycle. Apart from solo exhibitions, Jaffa has also been invited to take part in many local and international exhibitions, as well as artist residency programmes. She is now the Academic Head of Hong Kong Art School.
