On 19 January 2019 (Saturday), the Hong Kong Arts Centre and Alliance Française Hong Kong will present a screening of Day of Atonement (dir. Alexandre Arcady) and a Film Scoring Masterclass by Serge Franklin, one of the foremost masters of film music in France. A film score can expand an audience’s imagination, and music that can successfully grapple with a story’s emotion can enrich a film. Franklin will visit Hong Kong to host a masterclass to tell his story on scoring Day of Atonement, and share his insight, techniques and experience in music.

Day of Atonement is a story of a Jewish Mafia-like family who is running a prostitution ring, selling "protection," and operating gambling casinos - more or less with impunity, and at peace with their Arab counterparts - until a young gangster decides to pit the two ethnic factions against each other. Jewish cultural and religious events are celebrated by the Jewish gangsters, who promote family traditions - in contrast to the police inspector who has no family and is out to do them all in.
