Hong Kong Comics Touring Showcase in Shanghai

Venue: Shanghai (Pudong District, Jing'an District, Huangpu District, Changning District, Hongkou District, Xuhui District)

Promoting the culture of Hong Kong comics in China, Shanghai Hong Kong Association, Hong Kong Arts Centre and Comix Home Base are co-presenting a touring exhibition and comics workshops throughout Shanghai in October to December.

Hong Kong comics has been an essential role in Hong Kong culture for more than a century. For its boldness styles and distinctive characters, Hong Kong comics has captured the hearts of China and South-East Asia and many comics’ titles were even adapted into movie and TV drama. 

The event highlights the lives of Hong Kong Chinese that work, study and live in Shanghai. The showcase also displays the development of Hong Kong comics and invited Hong Kong comics artist Chi-kit Keung and Pen So to illustrate the stories of significant Hong Kong Chinese in Shanghai.

Chi-kit KEUNG

Keung started drawing comics after studying of illustration and graphic design. Having won winning the Comics New Talent Award by Rightman Comics in 1999, he became one of the most popular comics writers of CO-CO!. He has written a number of humorous comics including Thirty-Six Stratagems, Plane Fighters Fly! Fly! Fly!, and Samba Family. Appreciated by publishers in mainland China and Singapore, Samba series was published in simplified Chinese and English. In 2008, Keung won the 4th Golden Dragon Award Original Animation & Comic Competition – The Best Children Comics Award. In 2015, Keung was invited by Hong Kong Arts Centre to be one of the Hong Kong comics representatives joining The Angoulême International Comics Festival in France, and to decorate the tram body for Ding! Ding! Comix Tram. In 2016, Samba was selected as one of the new characters for Hong Kong Avenue of Comics Star and Ani-Com Park @ Harbour“FUN”.

 

Pen SO

Pen So is an illustrator and graphic designer from Hong Kong. In recent years, he participated in the work of creating comics and novel illustration. In 2013, he participated in the Comics Master Class presented by Comix Home Base. In 2014, he was a member of the elite team in the 3rd Hong Kong Comics Camp and won the first prize of the illustration group in the 7th Original Comic Competition. In the same year, he organised the exhibition Memories of My Home, and presented a series of postcards under the same name, helping readers to remember the sceneries of Hong Kong. In 2016, he published his first individual illustration Hong Kong Havoc, and won the Best Illustrated Book in Hong Kong Golden Book Awards 2016, Distinguished Publishing Awards – The Best Publishing Concept of The 28th Hong Kong Print Awards 2016, and Publishing Awards in Hong Kong Publishing Biennial Awards 2017.
