This is a love story inspired by the song “Threads” by Miyuki Nakajima.
Nakajima’s song is about the miracle of meeting a loved one and the ties of love that bind them. The song, which imagines these ties as threads woven through life, was released in 1998 as a dedication at her friends’ wedding. Ever since, this song has been loved by millions and been covered by over 120 artists in Japan.
In 2019, the Heisei period has come to a close after 31 years. A boy and a girl, who were born in the 1st year of Heisei, meet each other in childhood, eventually fall in love, but become separated along life’s path. They live in totally different circumstances, but continue to keep each other in their thoughts.
Though life brings them together from time to time, it is difficult for them to re-establish their ties. Even so, they don’t forget to live their lives to the fullest and love those around them with everything they can. This film tells the story of thirty years in the lives of two people connected by a thread of destiny, and is sure to awaken in those who view it a new appreciation for meeting people.

Missing the last train of the day on Tokyo’s Keio Line at Meidaimae Station, college student Mugi Yamane (Masaki Suda) encounters Kinu Hachiya (Kasumi Arimura). Finding they have near identical tastes in music and movies, the couple quickly hit it off and embark on a romance that has them move in together when they graduate from college. They work temp jobs as they interview for full-time employment. They pick up a stray cat. Even as the iconic Shibuya Parco store closes and the mainstay TV show, SMAP×SMAP, airs its last show, Mugi and Kinu seek a status quo. They are inseparable and spend “the best 5 years ever!” hoping they’ll always be together. The many seasons they spend together will rekindle your memories of a halcyon time when the world was full of love.

Cinema devotee Mort Rifkin (Wallace Shawn) accompanies his publicist wife Sue (Gina Gershon) to the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain, worried that her fascination with her young film director client, Philippe (Louis Garrel), might be more than professional. In addition, Mort hopes the change of scenery will provide a respite from his struggle to write a first novel that lives up to his impossibly exacting standards.
Turned off by the lavish praise showered on Philippe’s film, which he considers banal, Mort becomes preoccupied with the cinema classics he once taught as a professor, by masters like Bergman, Fellini, Godard, Truffaut, and Buñuel. Mort’s relentlessly dismissive opinions of Philippe, Sue’s current focus as a professional and someone she greatly admires, strains their already frayed relationship.
Mort’s mood lightens when he meets Dr. Jo Rojas (Elena Anaya), a kindred spirit whose marriage to tempestuous painter Paco (Sergi López) is also causing her pain. While Mort’s personal tastes have sometimes pushed people away, Jo’s intellect and shared sensibility draw them closer together.
While Sue spends her days with Philippe, Mort’s relationship with Jo deepens and he rekindles his love for classic films. Reflecting on the events of his life through the prism of those great movies, Mort finds renewed hope for his future.
