Experimental Gallery, Hong Kong Arts Centre (3/F)

Supported by the Hong Kong Arts Centre, Post Flu Syndrome exhibition presents the newly-made works and the selected works of two local young artists Wu Jiaru and Chan Ka Kiu. The concept of the exhibition evolved from the idea of feeling ill due to the syndromes of cold and flu.
 
Artist Wu Jiaru received her MFA degree from the School of Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong in 2017; whilst Artist Chan Ka Kiu received her BA in Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the same year. The two artists both participated in the art project and group exhibition The Best Is Yet To Come at K11 Chi Art Space, Hong Kong (2017) and Happily Ever After at Blindspot Gallery (2017), their artistic styles are different from each other yet share similarity in sense of humour and allegory.
 
Published in 1919, Lu Xun’s Medicine describes the ignorance of the common people in that tough era. In the age of the internet today, the world is flooded with both real and fake information, making us ignorant as similar to those in the story. This year (2018) will mark 100 years since the devastating influenza pandemic of 1918-1919, the exhibition Post Flu Syndrome takes influenza and virus as metaphors,  and drawing on the artists’ own experience, to construct modern fable that the reflect latent threat in our daily life.

About the artists
Wu Jiaru (b. 1991) obtained her BA in Fine Arts and English Language from Tsinghua University in 2014, and her MFA from the School of Creative Media in City University of Hong Kong in 2017. Wu works in installation, video, sound, printed edition and drawing where she takes art making as a methodology to observe the society and to study the history. Started with the individual experience and external atmosphere, her practices show interest in asking questions about the power system and provides an alternative imagination of the historical narratives. Wu has participated in group exhibitions including The Best Is Yet To Come at K11 Chi Art Space, Hong Kong (2017); Happily Ever After at Blindspot Gallery (2017); Other Sides of Evidence at Osage, Hong Kong (2017); 2016 SIGGRAPH ASIA in Macau; UTOPIA at Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2016); On the Road 2015—Nomination Exhibition of Chinese Young Artists & Forum of Young Art Critics at Guan Shan Yue Museum, Shenzhen (2015); Polytypic Evolution- A Close-up Observation at OCAT, Shenzhen, China.
 
Chan Clair Ka Kiu (b. 1995) is an artist using videos and paintings as her main media. With help of different materials and installations, Chan depicts a picture of the attitude in the generation she stood in. Through the conversations in her artworks, she discuss the lightness/heaviness of the happenings and the emotions. Chan finds art as the means to merge literature, philosophy and pop-culture into daily events without boundaries.
 
About the Curators
André Chan studied curatorial studies and East Asian studies in London and Toronto respectively. He has been worked in a number of international galleries including Hanart TZ Gallery and produced various exhibitions around the world, including The World of Luis Chan at Shanghai Art Museum and Place · Time · Play:India-China Contemporary Art Exhibition. His work is now focusing on artists’ practices and contemporary city issues. He curated exhibitions and performances in various cities including Shanghai, Seoul, Gwangju, Chicago, Vancouver and Hong Kong; recent exhibitions includes, Kotodama (Para Site, Hong Kong, 2018), It Was the Best of Time, It was the Worst of Times (Mana Contemporary, Chicago, 2017), I Like Blue When There is More White (KIGOJA, Seoul, 2017), Snark: A 4-Act Performance (Hong Kong, 2016), Form Simultaneity (100ft Park, Hong Kong, 2016), What Potions Have I Drunk of Siren Tears (A+ Contemporary, Shanghai, 2016), Songs without Words(100ft Park, Hong Kong, 2016) and These Shores (Rossi & Rossi Hong Kong, 2013).
 
Jing C.Y. Chong is an arts administrator and curator, she has been working in several art institutions and galleries including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, a.m. space Hong Kong and other projects. She is now working in the curatorial team in the Hong Kong Arts Centre.
