Comix Home Base (CHB) is housed in a cluster of ten renovated pre-war Grade 2 buildings located on Mallory Street in Wan Chai, spearheaded by the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) and administered by the Hong Kong Arts Centre on a five-year basis. With exhibitions, master classes, a resource centre, lectures and other programs, CHB provides a composite platform through education, retail and data collection of local and international comics art to promote this fascinating genre to Hong Kong as well as visitors from abroad. At the same time, the CHB is dedicated to nurturing new talent.

The first of its kind conjoining revitalised architecture with the arts community, Comix Home Base opened in mid-July and every year it organises a “Tribute to Masters” exhibition to inspire the new generation. The inaugural exhibition in this series will be “The Birth of a Hero – Exhibition of Ma Wing-shing’s Comics Works,” displaying the artist’s original sketches, his output spanning other media, as well as related products extending from his original creations. The exhibition also delves into the influence Ma has wielded on others, examining his contribution to Hong Kong’s own creative industries. The exhibition opens on August 22 and closes on October 20 from Tuesday to Sunday (closed on Mondays) between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Jointly presented by the CHB and Jonesky Limited of Hong Kong, it is free and open to the public, comprising one of the core activities of Hong Kong Ani-Com Summer 2013.

“The Birth of a Hero – Exhibition of Ma Wing-shing’s Comics Works” will put on display the artist’s celebrated series Chinese Hero and Storm Riders, including sketches and original drawings, models and a chronology of representative characters from different eras of both classics. In addition, interviews, a model of the artist’s workspace and extensions of his creations—films, animation, novels, computer games and action figures—will introduce the public to Ma’s world of fantasy. Having embarked on his career in the 1970s, Ma’s own creative path, the twists and turns of his career and his outstanding success are widely known. The exhibition will highlight the imaginary world of the artist, providing a comprehensive survey of how his works expand beyond mere comics and book publications. Activities related to the exhibition include comics master classes that offer young talents an opportunity to improve their own craft by interacting with professional practitioners. Eight limited edition postcards featuring Ma’s Storm Riders, alternating every week, will be distributed during the exhibition period on a first-come-first-served basis. A host of ancillary activities will also take place, including autograph sessions and other master classes. Original sketches on display will also be updated periodically.
