【Hong Kong Arts Centre】 Announces Mrs. Dominica Yang as New Board Chairman

Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) is pleased to announce Mrs. Dominica Yang has been appointed by the Chief Executive of Hong Kong as the Chairman of the Board of Governors from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2021, succeeding Mr. Nelson Leong who retired from the Board as Chairman on 31 March, 2018.

Mrs. Yang has extensive experience in arts audience development and is an active art supporter. She has previously worked closely with various nonprofit organisations in arts, culture, education, health and humanitarian work. Mrs. Yang has been a member of the Board of Governors of the HKAC since 2016 and served as the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Governors since 2017. She has initiated the launch of the HKAC Bee, an arts community group, to cultivate prospective audience- an endeavour to bring art to all and to nurture the appreciation and the creativity of the arts. As the former Chair of Friends of the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, she has also engaged various groups of volunteers to support the audience development of HKAC through different activities and projects.

Ms. Connie Lam, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Arts Centre said, “On behalf of the Hong Kong Arts Centre, I would like to welcome Mrs. Dominica Yang to be our new Board Chairman. We also want to take this opportunity to honour Mr. Nelson Leong’s notable contribution as Chairman of the Board in the past 6 years. Under his leadership, the Hong Kong Arts Centre has grown tremendously and made significant impact and achievements on the development of the Hong Kong local arts scene and the art ecology. His broad vision has allowed us to develop lots of cultural exchange programmes overseas, and marked several important and significant milestones. Under Mr. Leong’s guidance, our major facilities upgrade was effectively managed and completed; the 40th anniversary celebration was geared up for a wonderful success; and the realization of the first–ever Harbour Arts Sculpture Park in Hong Kong. We are also grateful for the unwavering support of our Honorary President, Ms. Cissy Pao Pui-lai, BBS, who has led HKAC to develop public art project for more than one decade, so as to prepare us to make this mega project a great success.

Mrs. Dominica Yang, the now Chairman of the HKAC, remarked, “I am honoured to join the HKAC family, and am thankful to Cissy and Nelson and other previous chairmen for their selfless and dedicated contribution to this unique arts institution. I will join hands closely with Connie and the whole team and try my utmost to support the HKAC to further drive positive impact of the arts on the development of local communities and social networks and expand our art education programmes, to further extend our reach to an even broader audience, and make a prominent footprint in the local and Asia’s arts scene.”

As this year marks the 40th anniversary of HKAC, the major facilities upgrade is timely in place. In addition to a continuous line-up of innovative programmes for the public, HKAC had the Harbour Arts Sculpture Park, Hong Kong’s first international sculpture park on the city’s iconic harbourfront which was concluded with a great success, other upcoming exhibitions including the first solo exhibitions of Sean Scully (28 Mar – 29 April, 2018) and Jane Lee (May 11 – June 10, 2018) in Hong Kong, featuring abstract art by the Irish-born, New York-based living master and installations by the acclaimed Singaporean artist respectively. This September marks the highlight of the year. HKAC will present its unique 40th anniversary exhibition Wan Chai Grammatical: Past, Present and Future, adding colour to HKAC’s recurring programmes like ifva and film screenings in collaboration with Golden Scene, whilst our Hong Kong Art School, the only studio-based institution offering award-bearing programmes in Hong Kong, has their ongoing efforts also on supporting young talents within the local art ecosystem and beyond.
