Yoichi Ochiai is an interdisciplinary researcher and media artist based in Japan. As the Japan Cultural Envoy, he shares his ideas with the Hong Kong art lovers in the solo exhibition at Hong Kong Arts Centre.
In the Artist Talk, Dr. Ochiai and media artist Mr. Eric Siu will share their practices in contemporary media art. The talk will be moderated by independent curator/media artist Mr. Ip Yuk-Yiu.

Yoichi Ochiai
Media Artist. Born in 1987. Received his Ph.D. in Applied Computer Science from the University of Tokyo, the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information. Associate Professor at the University of Tsukuba, Director of Research and Development Center for Digital Nature. Principal Investigator of JST CREST xDiversity Project. Yoichi has received numerous awards, including a World Technology Award in 2015, the Prix Ars Electronica 2016, an Honorary Mention in the EU STARTS Prizes 2016, Laval Virtual Awards in 2014-17, 2019 SXSW Creative Experience ARROW Awards and more. He was included in the Best Knowledge Pool at the St. Gallen Symposium and the Global Shapers at the World Economic Forum. Yoichi published various books including photographs and essays, “The century of Magic”, “Digital Nature”, and “Sehnsucht nach masse”. As an artist statement, he states following statement; exploring the boundaries in "End to End Transformation of Material Things", exploring the boundaries between images and materials, nature and computers, and freely crossing the boundaries of computer science, applied physics, and media arts.
Eric Siu
Eric Siu is a Hong Kong new media artist who has a broad interest in device art, interactive art, kinetics, installation, video and animation. He is currently based in Tokyo and works as a creative director for Great Works Tokyo advertising agency. He worked as a resident artist at the Ishikawa Oku Laboratory of the University of Tokyo for 2 years after he had received his MFA from the Department of Design Media Arts at UCLA in 2010. Before that, he had completed a 12-month cultural exchange and research project in the United States funded by the Asian Cultural Council. Eric’s works have been shown in Ars Electronica, MOCA Taipei, ZKM, FILE, Transmediale, EMAF, WRO, SIGGRAPH Asia, ISEA, Microwave, and so forth. His work “Touchy” received the first prize from the WRO 2013, 15th International Media Art Biennale, Wroclaw, Poland. The project has been featured in various media such as Discovery Channel, Neural, Washington Post, Huffington Post, the Creators Project, etc. Since 2008, he serves as a board member of Videotage, Hong Kong.
IP Yuk-yiu
Ip Yuk-yiu is an experimental filmmaker, media artist, art educator and independent curator. His works, ranging from experimental films, live performances, media installations to video games, have been showcased extensively at major international venues and festivals, including European Media Art Festival, New York Film Festival (views from the avant-garde), the Image Festival, FILE Festival, VideoBrasil, Transmediale, NTT ICC and WRO media art Bienniale. He is the founder of the art.ware project, an independent curatorial initiative focusing on the promotion of new media art in Hong Kong. Ip has over fifteen years of curatorial experience in film, video and media art. Currently he is Associate Professor at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. His recent works explore hybrid creative forms that are informed by cinema, video games and contemporary media art practices. In recognizing his artistic contributions and achievements, he was awarded the Artist of the Year (Media Arts) in Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2018.
