This film is director Ann Hui’s semi-autobiography. Hui-Yan (Maggie Cheung), who has never got along well with her mother (Luk Siu-Fan), returns home from abroad to attend her younger sister's wedding. After her sister moves out of Hong Kong, Yan has no choice but to accompany her mother back to her hometown, Beppu, in Japan. Unfamiliar with another country’s language and culture, Yan gets to know the loneliness and helplessness of her mother’s time living with her in-laws. From there, Yan learns about her mother again.
