In Greek mythology, the golden apple is a fruit of discord: a seemingly mundane fruit was enough to spark the Trojan war, which ultimately subverted and destroyed the Greek civilisation. Life is like playing chess; a blunder can obliterate the future without mercy. Perhaps everything is part of God’s plan and there is some destiny we cannot change, but how much is it influenced by our actions? Is life, after all, always in an invariable state of unknown?
Lau Hong Lam’s first solo exhibition took its title from the French phrase “Je ne sais quoi”, which literally means “I don’t know what”. It is an expression often used to capture appealing but elusive qualities—something evident in his prints as they unravelled one obscure secret after another. The second chapter of this exhibition series is subtitled “KALLISTI”, meaning “to the most beautiful”— the same word that was inscribed on the golden apple. The fruit eventually was not given to the most beautiful goddess; instead, it marked the catastrophic end of an entire civilisation.
To the most beautiful person—does this refer to the chosen one or the person who chooses? The more complicated one feels, the more obsessed they may become. In the process of keeping the secret while seeking for answers, we accidentally fall into chaos…

About the Artist
Lau Hong Lam achieved B.A. (Hons) degree in Visual Arts from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University in 2019. He studied at Accademia de Belle Arti di Bologna, Italy for one semester exchange programme in 2017. And he studied in B.A. (Hons) in Creative Arts and Culture (Major in Visual Arts) in 2014-2015. Lau’s works mainly focus on intaglio after graduation. In 2019, he received Hong Kong Open Printshop Award for Printmaking. He is invited to be an artist-in-residence of the printshop and hosts a solo exhibition. Lau has participated in the exhibitions in Hong Kong and overseas. His works are collected by local and overseas private collectors.
Lau’s works use still life as his genre, mythology as his background; combining with classical intaglio, his works create a harmonious and tranquil atmosphere. He likes to use symbols and puns to express his interpretation and experience to the world and daily life. On his works, the general compositions convey a relax and humorous daily. Under his works, the details and depictions of objects keep the secrets out of the daily. In recent years, he concentrates on mezzotint; and makes a new attempt of combining his illustrations, design and narratives nature into his works.

‘HKAC CREATORS FOR TOMORROW’ is a new initiative launched by the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) in 2020 to nurture and support Hong Kong emerging artists and curators who are attempting to launch a professional career in arts to gain practical experiences through programme planning, creation, and execution. The scheme accepts proposals for solo exhibitions or themed group exhibitions of various contemporary art forms and disciplines (Visual Art, New Media Art, Comic Art, Sound Art and Cross-disciplinary Arts) to be held at the Diana Cheung Experimental Gallery (3F, HKAC).

To reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19, the presenter have implemented the following precautionary measures:-
- Temperature scanning and facemasks are mandatory for all visitors. The presenter reserves the right to refuse entry to any persons who refuse to check their body temperature, or whose body temperature is higher than 37.5 degrees Celsius (as indicated by the temperature detector used by the presenter) or to those who have significant respiratory infections into the venue;
- Visitors are required to provide personal information or scan "LeaveHomeSafe" venue QR code before admission.
- Visitors are required to follow the venue instructions during the exhibition, maintain a 1.5 m social distance and avoid gathering more than four people.
The presenter will review the situation and adjust the measures if necessary. The presenter reserves the right to the final decision on the arrangement. We appreciate your understanding.
