A CHRISTMAS CAROL is a novella written by Charles Dickens. It was first published on 19 December 1843.
The play is set on a bleak, cold Christmas Eve in London seven years after the death of Ebenezer Scrooge’s business partner, Jacob Marley. Scrooge is a miser who hates Christmas.
He rejects an invitation to dinner by his nephew, refuses to donate to charity, and only grudgingly allows his overworked and underpaid clerk, Bob Crachit, the day off on Christmas Day.
That night he is visited by Marley’s ghost who appears covered in heavy chains forged during a lifetime of greed. He warns Scrooge that if he does not change, he will face the same fate. He tells Scrooge that three spirits will visit and that he should listen to them. After the visits from the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, Scrooge becomes a changed man and embodies the spirit of Christmas.
