Chivas LEUNG

Kayla LUI

Hong Kong Arts Centre (Comix Home Base) will be presenting three emerging comics artists: Evelyn Bih, Chivas Leung, and Kayla Lui in this first collaboration with LUSTR. LUSTR, a festival of contemporary original illustration and comics in Prague, and the largest illustration festival in the Czech Republic is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2023.

For this occasion, LUSTR is featuring a special exhibition Metafest Festival of Festivals bringing together the most inspiring illustration and comics festivals around the world. The 10 curators of art festivals choose artists and works from the countries of their origin. The participating festivals covers Europe and Asia, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Slovenia, Germany, France, Belgium, Hungary, Spain to Greece. It is expected to bring insights into different art scenes and encourage exchange between artists from different cultures.

The three featured Hong Kong artists are all alumni of comics master class organised by Comix Home Base in 2020. After gaining foundations from the course, they took their passion in comics a step further to different comics creations and experiments. It is exciting to see their latest works in LUSTR. Apart from exhibiting their experimental and stylistically expressive artworks, the Hong Kong artists, Evelyn Bih and Kayla Lui will also hold workshops and participate in talks. It will be a great chance to foster international connections for young and emerging artists.

Theme of Hong Kong exhibits: Party

Welcome to the Party presented by HKAC (CHB) and three Hong Kong aspiring female artists! Here you may find the fanciful imagery of Evelyn Bih, light-hearted fantasy by Chivas Leung, and muddy play by Kayla Lui.

Evelyn’s new work invite us into a journey of transformation. Following the crooked images of body, organs and cells, we are guided back to the fundamental of life form, thus being able to see the world from a new perspective.

Chivas Leung’s pure and childlike charisma in her works has earned her mentions in Bologna Ragazzi Children’s Book Awards and Angoulême International Comics Festival. Using vivid colours, she paves way into a dreamy world full of possibilities.

Kayla Lui’s new story addresses primordiality with her bold storytelling. Have we forgotten our most natural form? What lies ahead when we join hands and become mud together?

May it be peculiar ruminations, dreamlike imaginations, or dramatic blast, all three realms reflects the distinctive perspective of each artist. It will be our honour if they succeed in giving you any intriguing thoughts.

Hong Kong Artists

Evelyn BIH

Evelyn Bih (born in 1998) is a comic artist graduated from Academy of Visual Arts in Hong Kong Baptist University in 2021. She has also been awarded the Hong Kong Outstanding Visual Art Student Award in 2016 and has exhibited in the Youth Visual Art Exhibition 2016; as well as awarded the Outstanding Student Artist Award of Hong Kong 2017 and has exhibited in Reminiscing Tomorrow Second OSA Award After-show.

Evelyn uses illustrations and comics to express strange thoughts in daily life. She always presents her ideas through the lust of flesh, disturbance in life and the mysterious features in biology.

To her, making artwork is a trip to the unconscious mind. Even though the creative process can be painful, Evelyn is still passionate about creation and her artistic interpretations. Therefore, she continues to create.

Chivas LEUNG

Graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University in 2018. Her art practice focuses mainly on painting, drawing and printmaking. She sees art-making as a ritual to complete memory, as the irreversible nature of life prompts her to vividly recall past memories. Leung’s art is always ‘based on a true story’: while anecdotes in her works are often adapted from real-life experiences, they are imaginary. Those stories contain secret clues to retrieve the missing pieces in her memory. What is important, after all, is to commemorate all those times she had.

Recent exhibitions include solo exhibition River (Taiwan, 2022), YA KAN SAN PO (Hong Kong, 2021) and group exhibition Tri-angles (Hong Kong, 2022). In 2023, she was one of the artists featured in Fifteen Fantasies·Hong Kong Comics @The 50th Angouleme International Comics Festival. She was also recognised as one of the winning illustrators in Children’s Book Fair in Bologna, Italy in the same year. Her comic book, NIGHT NIGHT also received a Special Mention in the Bologna Ragazzi Awards, Comics – Young Adult Category.

Kayla LUI

Kayla Lui is a comics artist and illustrator from Hong Kong who currently resides in London. After graduating from BA Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts in 2020, she participated in FEVER Comics Masterclass in Hong Kong Arts Centre, which rooted her work in comics and small press publishing. She self-published her first comic book Dailongfeng Restaurant (2021), followed by Heavy Flavours Magazine (2023) and other zines. Her recent exhibition include Edges (2023), Stargazers (2022) and Wild Art Festival HK 2020. She explores a tone of playful absurdity, where naivety meets the uncanny, in her subversive interpretations of diasporic and subcultural identities.
