The Cannes Lions has marked its 70th year in 2023. As the most prestigious commercial event of the year, it has some of the best work in the world. There’s one home furnishing retailer that is known for its wit online. Where do the names of its product come from? There’s the age-old question from the children asking, “Why force me to eat veggies if you love me?” To birth, or not to birth? To borrow, or not to borrow? Which chocolate is da best? What to do if your hand gets stuck in a potato chips can? Can the online romance sparked during the pandemic be able to last its quality after the quarantine? Take care of the emotions behind the smile. After the pandemic, treat yourself to great works on a big screen!
Programme 2: Selection from the Kam Fan Awards Hong Kong 2022 & ADFEST 2023
15/9 (Fri) – 7:45pm
30/9 (Sat) – 4:00pm
86 mins|Digital|Colour|In Thai, Japanese, Mandarin, Hindi, Cantonese, English with Chinese and English subtitles
The Kam Fan Awards expresses the spirit of how advertising professionals stand with Hong Kongers in post-pandemic times, no matter how good or bad lives are. How does an electronics brand break the parent-child barrier? Love, sometimes a simple hug will do. Can an insurance commercial make you LOL enough to get one? What’s a home? What about family? When we do our best to study, work and have fun against all odds, we rule!
Pattaya based ADFEST is back with its ingenious winning work! This time with a pastry so good, that makes your eyeballs fall out. There are bittersweet humours that only adults can get. Some products are so aesthetically pleasing that it advances your life. How does artificial intelligence reboot love? Some monstrosity on screen can easily become normality. Happiness is that we still have happy times. Come to ADFEST for your happy hour!
Programme 3: Selections from HaHaHa Osaka Creativity Awards & The AICP Show 2023
16/9 (Sat) – 3:30pm
30/9 (Sat) – 7:30pm
110 mins|Digital|Colour|In Japanese with English subtitles; In English only
Last year’s HaHaHa Osaka Creativity Awards was such a success. It continues the creativity with more fun Japanese commercials that boost your genki spirit this year!
The AICP Show, The Art & Technique of the Commercial, is more than just an awards show judging the best commercials created in the moving image. The honoured work is also preserved in The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)'s Department of Film. The AICP also reached out to the world, showcasing the aesthetic and skills of outstanding international advertising professionals. What does it feel like to be surrounded by countless Adam Drivers? Recent knife attack incidents have been happening worldwide, how does an anti-weapon advocate and mother convey the message of her injured child? Girls hope that the strengths and social recognition of all genders can be proportional and fair: not striving for superiority, but aiming for shared growth. Hobbies are not just for entertainment; they are also dreams. Finally, we can now enjoy relaxed mindlessness during our travels.
Programme 4: Selections from the British Arrows Awards 2022
16/9 (Sat) – 7:30pm
28/9 (Thu) – 7:45pm
85 mins|Digital|Colour|In English
The British Arrows Awards annually honours the most outstanding British commercials, filled with British humour that offers a glimpse into the social phenomena of the diverse country. What prejudices and concerns do ethnic minorities face when joining the police force in the UK? How can we handle things calmly like a contented cow, even baffling issues? We should pay more attention to and support caregivers who are often overlooked. Disabilities are not something "special". Disability isn't an abnormality; it's just part of humanity. The pandemic has kept us isolated for a long time, but we must believe that good things come to those who wait. A drag queen reminds us, "If you don't love yourself, how the hell are you gonna love somebody else?" Caring for the Earth is an act of great love.
Programme 5: Selection from Adman Awards
17/9 (Sun) – 3:30pm
29/9 (Fri) – 7:45pm *With after-screening talk
1/10 (Sun) – 3:00pm *With after-screening talk
100 mins|Digital|Colour|In Thai and English with English subtitles
Sawadee! The long-awaited Thai Adman Awards lands in Hong Kong for the first time! Get ready for a series of hilarious, exciting, and unforgettable works! Even if you can't guess what the commercial is about at the beginning, it will definitely charm you into buying whatever it's selling by the end. King Kong wants you to know, please turn off your phone when watching a movie. Even rambutan is in the mood for love. Depending on your parents or spouse for financial protection? It's better to act and buy insurance for yourself! Why do relatives always care about you so much and too much? Cancer can bring a series of indescribable physical and mental blows, and cancer patients remain resilient. Despite the pandemic bringing more biases and divisions to the world, let's remember to have an open mind. Cheers!
