Retain the fading feelings with comics! Born in Hong Kong, live in Hong Kong. For creators who regard Hong Kong as homeland, the people and things of this place are certainly their sources of creative inspiration. Traces of the old Hong Kong, local unique culture, streetscape and landscape, life of the people – these all can compose a warming story.

Because of such great sentimental attachment to this city, comics artists draw about Hong Kong to preserve this place. Stories with familiar people, scenes and objects touch everyone in this city.

This talk invites Linus Liu, Pen So, and Stella So to talk about Hong Kong and us in different time and space.

Talk 2: What is the boundary between human and non-human?
Time: 16:30-18:00

Speakers: Kuma CHAN, Sam TSE
Moderator: Lawman LAW

Related comics: Crash, The Last Soul – Overland 1

The world of science fiction exists everything – a world that is beyond reality, time and life. Science fiction gives a sense of vastness, dreaminess and mystery that always leaves us with infinite room for reverie.

We easily associate science fiction with ‘non-human characters’, like robots, aliens from outer space, walking dead and so on. Is the unknown otherness just a figment of the imagination, or is it created based on the dark side of our human nature?

Imaginative sci-fi comics might be the reflection of reality and the exploration of future. In a certain extent, sci-fi comics are the utopias created by comics artists – a way to escape reality for a moment, open up imagination and lead to the unknown. It is a gateway to a realm all readers longing for.

This talk invites comics artists Kuma Chan and Sam Tse to unravel their regards for story settings about robots and the undead, exploring their works from another perspective.

Art for Passion, Art for Life, Art for All

Since 1977, Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) has been a platform for nurturing and supporting artists, and infusing art into everyday life. Its unique arts and educational programmes aim to make the arts accessible for all. The HKAC believes in the transformational power of art for people from all walks of life. Established over four decades ago, HKAC endeavours to bring arts to the people of Hong Kong – by presenting programmes for visual arts, performing arts, moving images and media arts, comics and animation. Other areas cover arts education, conferences, festivals, public art and community projects, all with the vision and mission of engaging and inspiring creativity in the Hong Kong community.

In 2000, HKAC founded its education arm, Hong Kong Art School (HKAS). HKAS provides award-bearing programmes to nurture artists and art practitioners, as well as short enrichment courses for the general public.

HKAC aspires to engage everyone in the community to become an active participant in the arts - as an enthusiast, an artist or a patron.

HKAC will continue its 45th anniversary celebrations into 2023. Let’s continue to embrace ‘Arts for Passion, Arts for Life, Arts for All’, and share the inspiration.

About HK Comics Support Programme

HK Comics Support Programme (HKCSP) is organised by the Hong Kong Comics and Animation Federation (HKCAF) and is supported by Create Hong Kong (CreateHK) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as the lead sponsor. HKCSP supports 15 selected local comics start-ups through a series of activities, including training and guidance from industry experts, as well as a maximum subsidy of HK$210,000 for each of the selected comics start-up to produce their own brand-new original comics (subsidised comics).

A series of promotional activities have also been conducted, including the exhibition of the selected comics start-ups and their subsidised comics at the Animation-Comic-Game Hong Kong (ACGHK) 2022 which was held in July and the Comic Fiesta 2022 in Malaysia which will be organised in December, to maximise the exposure of these start-ups and their subsidised comics in the local and overseas markets, with a view to helping them explore more business opportunities.

While HKCSP has been continuing with the promotional activities, the organiser will launch the 2nd edition in which 15 local comics start-ups will be selected by the judges with the list to be announced by end of 2022.  The 15 brand-new subsidised comics are expected to be launched at ACGHK 2023.
