In continuing to the story of an ordinary day in Fantaisie Ordinaire by Hong Kong Comics Artist Kwong-shing Lau, Andio Lai, the local sound artist played in line with the scenes drew by Kwong-shing Lau, presented a new performance work complemented music and graphics. Taking audience to hang around in Stanley. After the performance, the two artists have shown up together with the special guest—Victor Butzelaar, the original music composer of Fantaisie Ordinaire for video live sharing. They talked in details of their beloved creation, comics, music, and how they present the extraordinary art creations to the audience through the fantastic ensemble.

Fantaisie Ordinaire, the first French comic by the Hong Kong comics artist Kwong-shing Lau is officially launched!
Originated and drawn by Kwong-shing Lau, collaborated with Amsterdam composer Victor Butzelaar, Fantaisie Ordinaire turns words into music scores and depict the story with synchronising graphics and melodies.


Kwong-shing Lau portrayed this ordinary story with his diverse graphical compositions and perspectives—On a peaceful day, a man and a woman met somewhere; From the slow-going arrival and awaiting of the man, anticipated to the dressing-up of the woman—tension gradually built up along with the accelerating rhythm. And all of a sudden, the end unfolds… Combining reading and listening, readers will enjoy this heartwarming story in an innovative comics-reading experience.

In continuing to the complementing music and graphic of Fantaisie Ordinaire, the Hong Kong Arts Centre (Comix Home Base) is presenting a series of new book launch events, including comics originals exhibition, live drawing x music performance, book signing session, for all comics fans to immerse themselves in the delicate atmosphere created by the artists. Comics and music lovers surely cannot miss the new book launch events!

In view of the latest development of the COVID-19 infection, the live show Live Drawing x Music Performance originally scheduled on 2 August will be changed to streaming online for free on 7 August (Friday) at 8pm. In continuing to the story of an ordinary day in "Fantaisie Ordinaire", Andio Lai, the local sound artist will play in line with the scenes drew by Kwong-shing Lau, the comics artist in the performance, presenting a new creation complemented music and graphics. Audience could enjoy the performance on the Facebook page of Hong Kong Arts Centre in scheduled time for free, as well as interact with the artists through the live sharing session after the performance. We wish you to stay home and be energised by the power from the artistic creations.

Kwong-shing Lau, who spent his childhood in Kyoto, Japan, is deeply influenced by the Japanese comics culture. After returning to Hong Kong, he studied at the Department of Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has published over ten short comics series on different platforms such as MDecomics and Ani-Wave. His direction of creation has changed drastically since his participation in the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France by the invitation from Hong Kong Arts Centre in 2017. He frequently draws with pencil, creating the atmosphere with its tactile touches. While engage in the exploration of comics’ potential as a medium of expression, he also tries to deconstruct and rework what a ‘comics’ is.

His comics works include Cube Escape: Paradox, a collaboration with Rusty Lake in the Netherland and The Fallen City published in Taiwan. Cube Escape: Paradox which was sold globally was a great success, with the 100 limited editions sold out in four hours. His latest comics book Fantaisie Ordinaire is in collaboration with the Amsterdam composer Victor Butzelaar, published by Europe publishing house Patayo Éditions and is simultaneously launching in Europe and Hong Kong in 2020. Apart from comics, Lau is also dedicated in the production of animation. He has already created more than ten animation short films. Recently he has been focusing on drawing works related to social issues and was invited to participate in exhibitions such as Bangkok Through Poster in Thailand, The Art of Protest in Hong Kong and Éruptions @ Lyon BD Festival in France.

Andio Lai is interested in making sound objects and machine art, some are built to be used in his sonic performances. He obtained BA (Hons) in Creative Media, School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong & MA in Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Through the practice of media archeology, studying tools development and the relative history of interfaces, his works focus on the subject matter of experimental instrument, playing and human-machine relation. He is currently teaching subjects related to Media Art, Design and Technologies.


Past performances including : Sonic Anchor #24 Interfacing Dynamics (2015), Jockey Club Street Music Series: Experimental Series #3 (2016);
Selected past exhibition includes : The Act of Tracing, Para Site , Art Basel (2016), Breathing Space: Contemporary Art from Hong Kong, Asia Society Hong Kong (2017), Medialogue, Hong Kong Visual Arts Center (2018).

He is also a collective member of artist-run space Floating Projects, co-curating show such as Toy as Medium (2016), Sketch Out (2018).

 

 


 

To reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19, the presenter has implemented the following precautionary measures.

  • Mandatory body temperature checks are implemented. Presenter reserves the right to refuse entry to any persons whose body temperature is higher than 37.5 degrees Celsius (as indicated by the temperature detector used by presenter) or to those who have significant respiratory infections into the venue.
  • Participants are required to clean their hands with hand sanitiser before admission.
  • Participants are required to wear their own mask inside the venue.
  • To avoid people gathering, participants are required to follow the staff instructions during live drawing x music performance and book signing session, and maintain social distancing. 

The presenter will review the situation and adjust the measures if necessary. We appreciate your understanding.
