The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office has been actively promoting Hong Kong art to the world in recent years, culminating in participation at the upcoming Nuit Blanche Toronto. Since 2006, this award-winning event has showcased almost 1,600 art installations by approximately 5,800 artists.
As Hong Kong's leading art institute, Hong Kong Art Centre (HKAC) has worked with Dr. Hung Keung to highlight Hong Kong’s unique culture at the event. Established multimedia artist and current Chairman of the Academic Committee of Hong Kong Art School, Dr. Hung Keung has also been a key figure in one of HKAC's signature programmes – short film competition, IFVA. He has been the recipient of four awards and has served as an IVFA jury member, making him the ideal representative at Nuit Blanche Toronto.
Dim Sum Without Distance
Dim Sum, an iconic emblem of Cantonese and Hong Kong cuisine, weaves a rich tapestry of traditions and philosophies. More than just food, it represents lifestyle, social gatherings, and the intricate art of hand-making, reflecting deep values about food and living. In a pioneering collaboration for Nuit Blanche Toronto 2024, Hong Kong artist HUNG Keung invited Canadian artist and performer Lauren Runions to explore the world of Dim Sum. Supported by the Hong Kong Arts Centre and several cultural organisations, Lauren learned from a master, immersing herself in the multi-sensory aspects of this culinary art.
Embedded within the traditional Chinese painting theory is the concept of three distances, symbolizing the expansive dimensions of space and time within the viewer's experience. This profound theory, deeply rooted in Eastern artistic traditions, forms the cornerstone of the artistic discourse unfolding during Nuit Blanche Toronto within Love Park (96 Queens Quay West) from October 5-6, 2024.
This experience inspired a series of performance pieces, blending her insights from Hong Kong's diverse environments. HUNG Keung will artistically document Lauren's journey, transforming her performances into a captivating visual narrative displayed on five individual LED monitors of varying shapes and forms in Love Park during Nuit Blanche Toronto (October 5-6). As visitors engage with the exhibition, they will create their own narratives, reflecting on the artistic exchanges between Canada and Hong Kong.
"Dim Sum without Distance" invites audiences to embark on a sensory journey where art, culture, and cuisine converge, celebrating creativity and connection through the lens of Dim Sum.
