About the Artists

• Chi-tak LI

Chi-tak Li began his career in the comics industry in 1982. He self-published Tong Men Shao Nian, a prominent title which rocketed him to fame in 1987. He has since developed a distinctive art style, creating his own visual world with eerily experimental works that broke genre rules. Li’s transmedia creations transcend the boundary of comics and expand into movies, experimental theatres, literature, pop music and sculptures. The poster that he created for Hong Kong (China) local sci-fi action movie Warriors of Future has been widely praised. 

Li is also well-known in the international comics scene. His comics have been published in places like Japan, Taiwan (China), Malaysia, the Mainland, France, and Italy since the 1990s. In 2016, the Hong Kong Arts Centre jointly curated Li’s solo exhibition entitled 'Li Chi-tak, Hong Kong Wizard' with the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France. He is the first Hong Kong comics artist to hold a solo exhibition at this renowned comics festival. Later, he was invited to participate in the BD Louvre project, alongside publishing the comic book titled 'Moon of the Moon' (French and Chinese versions) in 2019 & 2020.

His recent publications include romance comics 'Yum Sui', comics that pay homage to Franz Kafka's literary classics 'Kafka', children's comics 'A Little Strawberry' (2022 & 2024 Reprint Edition), 'In the Path Artworks Collection Book', 'heroes', ‘heroess’, etc.

In 2022, Hong Kong Arts Centre awarded Honorary Fellowships to Li, recognising his invaluable contribution to the arts sector in Hong Kong and the Asian region.

•  ISATISSE

Isabel Tong is a Hong Kong illustrator and the founder of ISATISSE, a creative practice shaped by her background in fashion and product design. Her work is known for its bold visual language, emotional warmth, and ability to turn everyday city life into humour, imagination, and moments of joy. Balancing artistic expression with commercial versatility, she creates illustrations that move naturally across editorial, branding, licensing, publications, and collaborative projects.

At the centre of her practice is The Eye Bag Girl Abel, a character she created in 2016 as a reflection of urban emotions, daydreaming, and the small absurdities of daily life. Through Abel and her friends, Isabel builds a playful visual world where stress, food, sleep, and ordinary observations become relatable stories with personality and charm. This character-driven approach gives her work a strong identity while allowing it to connect with audiences in a very direct and human way.

Isabel’s practice has received international recognition, including the Japan Illustration Award 2024 Bronze Award for Urban Diorama, the Excellent Illustrator Award 2023 from the Japanese Illustrator Association, the 3x3 International Illustration Show No. 21 Merit Award in the United States, and the White Ravens 2024 in Germany for her first picture book Be Yourself. She has also collaborated with a wide range of brands and cultural projects, demonstrating her ability to create original visuals that resonate across different markets and audiences.

We Are The Pigs is a Hong Kong art unit whose first project, One Hundred Tales: Stories of Hong Kong Yokai, retells myths and ghost stories of the city through stickers, art toys, illustrated books, and film collaborations. The initiative explores over a century of Hong Kong’s cultural history and identity, presenting 100 yokai characters and their stories in a visually distinctive way. With an original illustration style and special printing effects, the series brings local supernatural folklore to life, while creating a collection that is engaging, fun to read, and deeply resonant with Hong Kong culture.

In recent years, the project has expanded into diverse forms of creative work, including illustrated book publications, cross-media collaborations with film, and commercial collaborations. It has gradually built a structured horror folklore universe, using the lightness of stickers to carry the weight of culture. Between collective memory and pop culture, the project pieces together a fantastical map that is unique to Hong Kong, while also extending its reach into broader visual and commercial contexts.

The series has received strong public attention as well as industry recognition, including the Illustrated Book Publishing Award at the Hong Kong Publishing Biennial Awards. It has also appeared on Eslite’s Hong Kong bestseller and top writer lists in both 2024 and 2025, reflecting its reach as both a cultural project and a widely read contemporary IP.

• CHIYA

Chiya is a Hong Kong artist whose practice centres on children’s books, picture books, novels, and comics. Since 2009, she has worked full-time across these fields, developing a visual language that is soft, reassuring, and attentive to everyday feelings. Her drawings often focus on girls, children, and natural landscapes, and this gentle sensibility also shapes her original character world, ROMO DOLDOL STUDIO, built around NIM, ROMO, and DOLDOL.

Across her published works, Chiya moves fluently between storytelling and illustration. Her books include The One Who Speaks With Stars series, the fairy tale series Forest of the Fairy Tales, Heart of the Fairy Tales, and Music of the Fairy Tales, as well as The Girls Who Plant the Rainbows and illustration books such as Mint, Couleur, Magic Wardrobe, White Butterfly, and Bond (Kizuna). Together, these works show a practice that is consistent in tone yet broad in expression, allowing her visual world to expand across different formats and audiences.

Her work has received recognition through awards, including China’s 9th Golden Dragon Award for Best Illustration, the 7th and 12th International Manga Awards in Japan, and the HK Comics Support Programme Bronze Award. These honours reflect the strength of her drawing, her sensitivity to narrative, and the broad appeal of a practice that continues to grow through both published books and original character development.

• Jerry CHO X Jacky CAI

Jerry Cho is a Hong Kong comic artist and storyteller with extensive experience across publishing, editing, and visual narrative. Over the years, he has worked with major Hong Kong comics publishers and served as chief editor for more than 300 comic volumes, including comic adaptations of Biohazard and Dead End, as well as projects such as 81 and The Life After Life. His 2022 novel Dead End was later adapted into the ViuTV television drama Rope a Dope, and his artwork has been shown in venues ranging from Hong Kong International Airport to the Water Supplies Department’s 100-metre mural wall and concert stage visuals.

Jacky Cai is an actress, screenwriter, author, and creative collaborator whose work extends beyond screen performance into writing and comics. With experience across film, television, and narrative development, she brings a different sensitivity to character and storytelling, helping shape Meeboo’s warmth and approachable charm. Together, Cho and Cai create a world that balances fantasy with emotional clarity, allowing the character to speak to audiences of different ages. Their work on The Life After Life has been recognised with the Bronze Award at the 19th Japan International MANGA Award and as one of the Top Ten Comics and Illustration Works at the 2nd Lingnan Water Town International Cartoon & Animation Week.

About Comix Home Base

Comics and animation are important local pop culture and artistic creations. Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) has been dedicated to planning and organising diverse and unique activities to promote the arts and culture of comics and animation to the local community and abroad.

Since 2006, HKAC curated Comix Home Base project (CHB), and has been working closely with comics artists, animators, industry practitioners and various government departments to promote local works. Over 1,000 ani-com-related events are hosted, such as exhibitions, talks, workshops, performances, publications, screenings, public arts, etc.

In recent years, Comix Home Base has continued to proactively orchestrate cross-media collaborations and look for crossovers between comics and different media like public art, movie, dance, intangible cultural heritage, martial arts etc., expanding the creative space for comix. Outside Hong Kong, the footprints of Comix Home Base can be found overseas in France, Belgium, Britain, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Japan, Mainland China, Taiwan,  Singapore, Korea, Russia, Indonesia, Portugal, Türkiye, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Austria, etc. This has facilitated the involvement of numerous Hong Kong comics artists in international collaboration projects. Also, local comics have been successfully published in different foreign versions in European countries and the United States, increasing the international recognition of local comics and animation artists.
