Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) has a long-standing tradition of fostering artistic exchanges locally and internationally. Following this four-decade tradition as the only local non-profit multi-arts institution, HKAC is delighted to present a talk with renowned Colombian artist Master Fernando Botero’s son, Fernando Botero Jr. on Wednesday 13th November 2019 at Louis Koo Cinema in the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Botero Jr. will share with the audience beyond renowned Colombian artist Master Botero’s colourful paintings and voluptuous sculptures, giving us an intimate account on the life of his father, and why the everyday Colombian life is deeply rooted in the Master’s artwork. The talk is free and open to public.

Master Botero’s work, both paintings and sculptures, represent a universal language through shape and harmony, colour and volume, and speak to people from all walks of life. His inspirations include Renaissance maestros as well as modern giants such as Picasso and Matisse, all of them skilled in both painting and sculpture.

Master Botero’s works have been exhibited in the National Museum of Beijing, China Art Museum of Shanghai, and a monumental sculpture exhibition was held in Hong Kong in 2016. Prior his touring exhibitions in China, his monumental sculptural pieces have been seen in iconic public spaces such as the Fifth Avenue in New York, La Piazza dellla Signoria in Florence, Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the Fine Arts Palace in Mexico City and Venice.

“An Evening with Fernando Botero – Botero and Asia” is a great opportunity for art lovers, collectors, art students and the public alike to learn about the life of Master Botero and his influence around the globe directly from his family member, right in the heart of Hong Kong, at the Hong Kong Arts Centre.

About Fernando Botero
The Master
Born in Medellin, Colombia in 1932, Maestro Fernando Botero is one of the world’s most recognized living artists of our time. With his first paintings and drawings inspired by Gustave Dore’s engravings of the Divine Comedy, and posters of bullfights, Botero held his first exhibition in Bogota, Colombia in 1951, and in 1952 he won second place in the “Salon Nacional de Artistas” in Bogota. With his prize money, he travelled to Madrid and Florence, where he studied the exploration of volume and perspective from the Renaissance masters. With a style that is immediately recognized and celebrated, Botero has maintained throughout his career, the essence of Colombian and Latin American elements in his creation.

Although his subject matters have always been local, his universal language of art is what propelled him to worldwide success. With a career spanning over 50 years and having exhibited all over the world, Fernando Botero is an iconic living artist of our time who has had the most museum exhibitions and the most books written about him. Maestro Fernando Botero is still active today.

Renowned for his distinctive style and exploration with colour and exaggerated volume, Fernando Botero’s ‘Boterismo’ single handedly redefined beauty with using sensual and voluptuous forms and a pioneering notion of aesthetics. So much so that his work has been recognized across cultural and geographical borders, far from his hometown in Colombia.
