When we think of Impressionism, the greats of that painting style naturally come to mind — including Claude Monet. A canvas, awash with his impeccable mastery of colour, beckons you to enter his secret garden where flora sway sweetly in the wind and bloom in rapturous hues.
Monet created a world of soft, rhythmic brushstrokes and a beautiful mix of pastel colours that fuse seamlessly together. His well-proportioned compositions are a goldmine for artists and students to learn from. In this course, try your hand at painting those quintessential icons of impressionist brilliance - water lilies - using Monet’s colour palette. You will also dive into colour theory, experiment with colour-mixing, and master brushstrokes as you create your own garden-inspired artwork.
Using oil paint as a medium, students will:
- Grasp colour theory, colour mixing and atmospheric colour palette of Impressionism and Monet
- Understand and handle the different qualities of brushstroke by Monet and Impressionists
- Observe and analyse the composition and positive vs negative space
- Try to dissolve and merge shapes of objects and their background
- Appreciate the orchestration of line, shape, colour and their spatial relationship in harmonious unity
- Learn to use thin wash, impasto, scumbling techniques; direct vs indirect painting methods
- Apply the characteristics of Monet’s paintings in one's creation in terms of brushstroke, colour balance & layering
