What do Benjamin Franklin, William Gilbert, Nikola Tesla, Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison have in common? They all contributed to the discovery of electricity! From showing that lightning is a form of electricity to developing the first AC motor and the lightbulb - these gentlemen made it possible for the world to easily cook, clean, warm up, cool down, and light up!  

 

Welcome to this STEAM course on Electricity, where you will charge up on knowledge about one of our most precious resources. But unlike other STEAM classes out there, this combines the best of art and academics — or what we call ‘Art-cademia’ - to enhance learning and creativity simultaneously! 

 

Through 3 sub-themes and hands-on creations, students will gain an extensive understanding of the what, how and why of electricity: 

 

Hand-Crank Generator (4 lessons) 

Course Overview: 

Use small motors to generate electricity and create a DIY personally designed hand-cranked flashlight  

 

Learning Focus: 

- Experience the interaction between motors and electricity 

- Understand the basics of three-dimensional structures and principles 

 

Lemon Battery Discovery (4 lessons) 

Course Overview: 

Create an architectural model with LED lighting powered by lemon batteries 

 

Learning Focus: 

- Explore how to generate electricity using lemons 

- Learn about series and parallel circuits 

- Build simple circuits to light up a bulb 

- Design a small house with an electrical system 

 

Sustainable Solar Power (4 lessons) 

Course Overview: 

Using everyday recyclable materials, create a small solar-powered boat that sails when exposed to sunlight 

 

Learning Focus: 

- Understand the basic principles of solar cells 

- Use basic hand tools safely

Tutor 

Hansel Li  

 

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Hansel graduated from the Fine Art programme co-presented by Hong Kong Art School and RMIT University in 2009 and the University of West England’s Electronic Communication Engineering programme in 2023.  

 

He explores a variety of creative languages through mediums like painting, sound, and electronics. With over a decade of experience in visual art education, Hansel co-founded BiLiBaLa Art Studio in 2021 and is dedicated to art creation and education. He has participated in and coached for different community art projects including “Somewhere Over the Lung Tsun Bridge” (2023-2024), "Kowloon City Youth Arts Festival” (2023-2024) and “Playful Public Design” (2019).
