Identifiable with a swirly-whirly starry night and notorious for cutting his ear off, Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter — and one of the most influential figures in the history of Western art.
A trailblazing Expressionist, Van Gough poured his personality and passion into every painting. It is unapologetically conspicuous in the bold, swirling brushstrokes and vibrant colours that he used to depict everyday objects like his yellow bedroom, chair, and pool table. These elements appear to be alive, leaping off the canvas with their unique essence. Students will gain a wealth of knowledge from Van Gogh’s techniques as they explore how he used brushstrokes, colours, and forms. You will also discover how to creatively re-arrange objects to express your individual perspective.
Students will:
- Enhance their handling of oil paint as a medium of painting
- Understand the use of colour theory, colour-mixing and the subjective colour palette of Post-Impressionism and Expressionism
- Learn the different qualities of brushstrokes by Expressionists and Van Gogh
- Attempt to distort and exaggerate shapes/forms aesthetically and emotionally relative to one’s own feeling and pictorial needs
- Observe and analyse composition and colour palette
- Explore linear perspective: One-point perspective and its application
- Learn to use impasto and outline in selected areas and details
- Apply Van Gogh’s painting characteristics in one’s creation in terms of brushstroke, use of colour, and distortion of form
