Chinese Seal Engraving Course | Out of the Cube - Art Learning Experience 2023

Registration Details

(1)  Visual X Texture: Graphic Design and Seal Engraving

Seal engraving, a seemingly unattainable and elegant literati art, has actually been scattered in the corners of the city. It is commonly seen in shop trademarks and even on fine book spines. Seal engraving can also be viewed as a component element of graphic design. This course explores Chinese seal engraving through the lens of visual principles. In addition to typeface design, it also introduces various types of seals and their features. In each lesson, participants will create one seal artwork, with sculpting exercises of varying difficulty levels, benefiting both beginners and advanced learners.

(2)  Texture X Material: Seal Engraving Laboratory

Since ancient times, stone has been used as the material for engraving seal carving. The hardness of the stone used is relatively low (about 2-4 degrees on the Mohs scale). Even physically-weak scholars can create their own seals without the help of craftsmen. The material characteristics of stone have also inspired renowned seal carvers throughout ancient and modern times, showcasing their style through gold and stone knife marks. However, exploring the use of materials other than stone for seal engraving is a vast area that remains unexplored. This course aims to guide students in breaking away from stereotypes and approaching seal carving from the perspective of different craftsmanship.
