홍콩아트센터(코믹스 홈 베이스)가 주최하고 홍콩특별행정구 경제무역대표부가 협력하는 <영‧화 홍콩지> 홍콩 만화 X 영화 전시 인 서울 이 한국의 인사아트센터에서 선보이게 됩니다. 이 번 전시에서는 홍콩 영화와 만화/일러스트를 통해 홍콩 관광과 문화를 알리고 홍콩과 한국 간의 문화적 이해를 높이며 시각예술과 영화문화의 상호 교류 활성화를 목표로 합니다.
홍콩영화는 실제 현장 촬영이 특징으로 세계적으로도 유명합니다. 저명한 미국의 영화감독 피터 보그다노비치는 '영화의 배경은 가끔 스타만큼 기억에 남기도 한다'라고 말 한 적이 있습니다. 영화 배경은 영화에서 필수적인 요소로 스토리에 깊이를 더 해주고 시대상을 반영합니다. 배경이 영화를 완성시키는 동시에 도시를 기록하기 때문입니다. 그렇게 우리는 영화의 장면과 스토리를 통해 각각 다른 시대의 도시 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 홍콩은 작은 도시지만 거의 모든 장르의 미쟝센을 연출할 수 있는 독특하고 다채로운 풍경이 가득한 도시입니다.
이번 서울 전시는 다양한 시각적인 접근을 통해 홍콩의 독특한 도시 문화를 폭넓은 세계의 관객들에게 소개하는 것이 목적입니다. 최근 몇 년간 한국은 만화, 일러스트, 엔터테인먼트 산업 전반에서 문화적 소프트 파워의 다양성을 보여주었습니다. 이번 서울 전시에서는 특별히 한국 영화와 예술인들을 초청하여 홍콩과 한국의 창의적인 예술 산업 분야의 교류를 도모하고자 합니다.
이 전시에서는 만화, 영화, 가상현실예술 체험 등을 결합하여 진행하게 됩니다. '서칭 포 뷰 인 홍콩' 시리즈로 알려진 홍콩 만화가 청콴호을 비롯해 신진 홍콩 일러스트레이터펄 라우, 그리고 인기있는 한국 일러스트레이터 이규태 등이 참여하여 9곳의 홍콩과 한국의 영화촬영지를 표현한 작품들을 선보입니다. 또한, 한국의 유명한 아티스트인 집시(Zipcy)가 아트잼 프로그램에 참여할 예정입니다.
2007년 홍콩 영화 <천공의 눈>과 이를 리메이크한 2013년 한국 영화 <감시자들>은 홍콩과 한국 간 예술산업 교류사에 있어 성공적인 리메이크 사례 중 하나라고 할 수 있습니다. 영화 초반, 경찰과 범인이 절묘하게 같은 장면에서 엇갈립니다. 공간은 홍콩 트램 대신 분주한 서울 지하철로 바뀌었습니다. 감독은 이 특징적인 장면을 도입부로 이야기의 시작을 알립니다. 한국 버전에서는 이 도입부를 반전의 단서로도 활용합니다. 후반부에 홍콩의 차터가든/서울의 청계광장에서 전화통화를 단서로 인물들의 추격씬이 펼쳐지면서 두도시의 평온한 오아시스 같은 장소들은 서스펜스로 뒤덮입니다. 선명함과 모호함을 동시에 품은 홍콩과 서울의 복합적인 도시 풍경은 그 자체로 스토리 상 중요한 요소이며 홍콩과 한국 각각의 독특한 문화로 해석된 두 도시는 강렬하고 매력적인 평행 세계를 구현해냅니다.
최근 개봉한 블럭버스터 <구룡성채: 무법지대> 또한 원작과 다른 새로운 영화적 해석을 보여준 작품입니다. 영화는 원작 이야기와 만화의 주요 부분을 차용하여 관객들을 나단로드에 있는 네온사인, 야우마테이 과일 도매시장과 구룡성채 비롯한 과거 홍콩으로 데려다줍니다. 이 작품의 경우는 원작 소설이 만화, 게임, 아트토이 그리고 영화 등 다양한 미디어로 확장된 성공적인 사례라 할 수 있습니다. 이번 전시에서는 특별히 원작 소설 작가이신 유이(Yuyi) 작가를 초청하여 한국의 주성철 영화평론가와 대담 시간을 갖습니다.
그 밖에 흥미로운 홍콩 영화와 그 주된 배경들도 소개합니다. <발라드 온 더 쇼어>의 유츤(어촌마을), <위즈 온 파이어>의 시지산(라이언 락) 공원 2번 야구장, <파 파 어웨이>의 무이츠람 마을, <맨 온 더 드래곤>의 와후츤(와후지구), <미드나잇 애프터>의 차찬탱(찻집 겸 식당) 그리고 <더 웨이 위 킵 댄싱>의 시또(동네 식재료 상점) 등을 통해 다양한 홍콩의 매력을 선보입니다.
홍콩의 압도적인 도시전경이나 혼잡한 골목 구석의 '현지 느낌' 가득한 영화장면 스틸 사진들은 그 장면을 묘사한 아트웍과 나란히 배치되어 관객들은 홍콩의 실제 모습과 상상속의 이미지를 비교해가며 감상할 수 있습니다. 또한, AR 인터랙티브 아트 체험을 통해 예술작품을 현실 속으로 불러들여 '영화 x 만화'의 조합을 색다른 방식으로도 체험해볼 수 있습니다. 이번 전시를 통해 해외의 관객들은 다양한 이야기를 품고있는 흥미로운 홍콩의 장소들을 홍콩영화의 렌즈와 만화 작가들의 작품을 통해 새롭게 발견하고 즐길 수 있을 것입니다.

청콴호（홍콩）
청콴호는 테마에 따라 홍콩의 풍경을 담은 ‘서칭 포 뷰 인 홍콩’이라는 일러스트 시리즈를 발행하였습니다. 전통적인 만화 작화 방식으로 우리에게 익숙한 홍콩의 모습을 담으려고 노력했습니다. ‘서칭 포 뷰 인 홍콩’은 많은 기업들의 협업 요청을 받아왔고 작품은 좋은 평가를 받고 있습니다. 2018년 작가는 그의 친구와 FIREFLYHK라는 브랜드를 런칭하여 다른 작가와의 협업을 통한 만화 관련 상품을 모아서 소개하고 있습니다. 같은 해에 홍콩의 거리 풍경 그림을 담은 < 서칭 포 뷰 인 홍콩 Vol.1>를 출간하였고 그 때부터 ‘서칭 포 뷰 인 홍콩’을 시리즈로 발전하게 되었습니다. 그는 다양한 예술 매체의 창작성을 통해 열정적이고 흥미로운 교류를 할 수 있는 온라인 플랫폼을 구상하고 있습니다. 작가는 2021년에 FIREFLY 컬렉션(일러스트와 만화)을 발행했으며 끊임없는 열정으로 창작활동의 꿈을 한걸음씩 실현해 나가고 있습니다.

펄 라우（홍콩）
펄 라우는 홍콩에서 활동하는 일러스트레이터이자 만화가이며 웨스트잉글랜드 대학에서 일러스트레이션을 전공했습니다. 그녀는 유머, 문학, 역사는 물론 일상을 관찰하다가도 영감을 얻어 작업을 하는 편인데 위트 있는 시각적 표현을 활용하는 것을 좋아하고 어떤 문제 해결을 하다가 최적의 이야기 방식을 찾아 작품에 활용하기도 합니다. 그녀의 주요 클라이언트는 태틀러 홍콩, 루이 뷔통, 디자인 앤솔로지 등입니다. 지난 2년간 그녀의 만화는 숏박스 코믹스 페어에 참가하기도 했습니다.

유이（홍콩）
만화 대본 작가로 시작한 그는 무협, 로맨스, 블랙코메디, 비리 풍자 등 다양한 주제를 다뤄왔습니다. 2010년에 구룡성채를 배경으로 하는 범죄소설 <시티 오브 다크니스>를 통해 유명해졌으며, 이 후 만화로 제작되어 연재될 때는 대본과 각색을 직접 맡았습니다. 그는 이 작품으로 일본국제만화상을 받은 첫번째 홍콩 작가가 되었습니다. 이 후 <시티 오브 다크니스>를 원작으로 제작된 영화 <구룡성채: 무법지대>가 2024년 5월 개봉되었고 홍콩, 중국, 일본 등에서 관객과 평론가 모두에게 호평을 받았습니다.
그 밖에 그의 작품으로는 <Z 포 좀비> 시리즈, <5월의 그와 그녀>, <화이트 피크> 그리고 <로어링 센츄리 1953-1962> 등이 있습니다.
2013년에 그는 '크리에이션 캐빈'이라는 출판사를 설립하여 현지 창착물을 발행하고 홍보하는 사업을 시작했습니다. 현재까지 만화, 소설, 동화책, 사진집, 그래픽 노벨 등 총 300개 이상의 작품을 발행하였습니다.

이규태（한국）
이규태(필명 kokooma)는 서울에서 활동하는 한국의 만화가이자 애니메이터, 일러스트레이터입니다. 그는 사물과 공간을 이해하고 표현하는 것을 좋아한다. 특유의 은은한 표현 방식으로 한국의 일상을 아름답고 신비롭게 그려내며, (2008년작 <돌아보다>와 같은) 단편 애니메이션 작업도 했습니다. 수많은 책표지와 삽화를 그렸고 작가의 뛰어난 표현 기법은 찬사를 받아왔습니다. 그가 겹겹이 섬세하게 그린 아름다운 그림들은 처음에는 모호해 보일 수 있지만, 서서히 작가의 그림에 대한 애정과 작가에게 지속적으로 영감을 주는 자연스러운 세상으로 이끌어줍니다.

대표작으로는 연인과의 미묘한 감정을 스킨쉽을 통해 묘사한 ‘닿음[TOUCH]‘ 시리즈가 있으며, 세계적으로 많은 사랑을 받아 대만 중국 러시아등의 나라에서 번역 출간되었습니다.
디즈니, 넷플릭스, 펭귄북스 등 다양한 기업과 협업했으며, 글로벌 NFT 프로젝트 SUPER NORMAL의 아트 디렉터로 참여하여 큰 주목을 받았습니다.
세상과 인간에 대한 호기심을 원천으로 하는 그녀는, 야릇함과 섬세함의 경계를 능숙하게 오가며 관계의 복잡성과 미묘한 감정을 표현합니다.

주성철은 <키노>로 영화기자 일을 시작해 <필름2.0>을 거쳐 <씨네21>에서 편집장으로 일하다 현재는 네이버 영화 콘텐츠 공식 파트너사 ‘씨네플레이’ 편집장으로 일하고 있습니다. 어려서부터 홍콩영화에 매료되어 영화평론가가 된 이후에도 오우삼, 허안화, 왕가위, 두기봉, 주윤발, 성룡, 양자경, 양조위, 견자단 등 수많은 홍콩 영화인들을 인터뷰했습니다. 장국영을 집중 조명한 <그 시절 우리가 사랑했던 장국영>과 홍콩영화 촬영지들을 소개한 <헤어진 이들은 홍콩에서 다시 만난다> 등 홍콩과 관련된 책도 여러 권 냈습니다. <그 시절 우리가 사랑했던 장국영>은 홍콩, 마카오, 대만, 중국에서도 번역되어 출간됐습니다. <구룡성채: 무법지대>를 만든 정 바오루이 감독과는 지난해 부천국제판타스틱영화제에서 마스터클래스를 진행했습니다.

1977년부터 홍콩아트센터(HKAC)는 예술가를 육성하고 지원하는 플랫폼이 되어 예술을 일상과 함께 할 수 있도록 그 역할을 해왔습니다. 센터가 선보이는 특별한 예술 작품과 교육 프로그램은 누구나 예술을 쉽게 접할 수 있도록 하는 것을 목표로 합니다. 홍콩아트센터는 예술이 사람들의 삶을 나은 방향으로 변화시켜 줄거라 믿습니다. 40년이 넘는 시간동안 홍콩아트센터는 시각예술, 공연예술, 영상 및 미디어아트, 만화, 애니메이션 등의 프로그램을 통해 홍콩 사람들에게 예술을 소개하고 있습니다. 그 외에도 예술 교육, 컨퍼런스, 페스티벌, 대중 예술과 프로젝트를 홍콩 시민 사회의 창의성 개발에 초점을 맞추고 영감을 줄 수 있도록 사명감을 가지고 진행해왔습니다.

코믹스 홈 베이스
만화와 애니메이션은 지역 대중문화와 예술적인 창작에서 아주 중요한 부분입니다. 홍콩아트센터(HKAC)는 만화와 애니메이션 문화를 지역 사회와 해외에 소개하는 특별하고 다양한 활동을 준비하고 기획하는데 전념해왔습니다.

Organised by the Hong Kong Arts Centre (Comix Home Base) and supported by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the A Visual Voyage: Hong Kong and Scenes, Hong Kong Comics x Movie Exhibition in Seoul will be showcased at the Insa Art Center, South Korea. The exhibition aims to promote Hong Kong culture and tourism through Hong Kong movies and comics/illustrations, fostering cultural exchange between Hong Kong and South Korea through the exhibition in Seoul and encouraging interdisciplinary dialogue between visual arts and film culture.
Hong Kong movies are renowned internationally, with on-location shooting being a distinctive feature of local productions. Renowned director Peter Bogdanovich once said, ‘Sometimes a movie's setting plays as memorable a role as its stars.’ Scenery is an indispensable part of a movie, enriching the depth of the movie's content and serving as a vital urban record. Scenes shape movies, documenting cities. Through the scenes and the stories, a city's profile across different eras can often be outlined through movies. Despite its compact size, Hong Kong is full of unique and diverse cityscapes that can be staged as mise en scènes for countless genres of films.
The exhibition in Seoul aims to present Hong Kong's unique urban culture through various visual approaches to a wider international audience. In recent years, South Korea has shown increasing diversity in cultural soft power, with the development of comics, illustration, and entertainment industries complementing each other. The exhibition in Seoul uniquely features Korean movie and artists, enhancing cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and South Korea's creative industries.
The exhibition blends comics, movies, and Augmented Reality animation, with participating artists including Hong Kong comics artist Kwan-ho Cheung, known for the ‘Searching For Views In Hong Kong’ series, emerging Hong Kong illustrator Pearl Law, and famous South Korean illustrator Kyutae Lee, showcasing artworks depicting nine filming locations in Hong Kong and Korea. Additionally, renowned South Korean artist Zipcy will participate in the Art-jam activity.
The 2007 Hong Kong movie Eye in the Sky and the 2013 Korean adaptation movie Cold Eyes exemplify successful script adaptations between the creative industries of Hong Kong and Korea. The urban landscapes of Hong Kong and Seoul are intricately linked to the plot. At the beginning of the movie, the protagonist and antagonist coincidentally meet in the Seoul subway, symbolising the bustling and intertwined nature of Hong Kong trams. By utilising the characteristics of the setting, the plot unfolds in a compact and suspenseful manner. The Korean version of the movie elevates this scene as the catalyst for a plot twist. In the middle of the film, the characters engage in a crucial phone tracking storyline in either Hong Kong's Chater Garden or Seoul's Cheonggye Plaza, shrouding the distinctive urban oases of the two cities in mystery. With the city views of these metropolises alternating between sharpness and ambiguity, showcasing two parallel yet equally intense and compelling worlds interpreted through distinct Hong Kong and South Korean cultures.
The recent blockbuster movie adaptation Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In will also show its new face through a new graphic interpretation. From the neon signs of Nathan Road, the fruit market of Yau Ma Tei, to the walled village, the movie captures the dramatic essence of the original story and comics, providing audiences with a revisit to the classic Hong Kong. Serving as a successful example of a novel adapted into comics, game, art toy, and movie across different media, the exhibition specially invites the author Yuyi to have a conversation with veteran Korean film critic, Sungchul Joo.
Other exciting Hong Kong films and scenes include the fishing villages from Ballad On The Shore, Lion Rock Park Baseball Field 2 from Weeds On Fire, Mui Tsz Lam village from Far Far Away, Wah Fu Estate from Men On The Dragon, a cha chaan teng (or ‘tea restaurant’) from The Midnight After, and a local grocery store from The Way We Keep Dancing, presenting diverse charm of Hong Kong.
By juxtaposing artwork with film stills, the exhibition navigates audiences to discover Hong Kong in between reality and imagination, depicting Hong Kong's ‘local flavour’ in its grand landscapes or bustling city corners. Additionally, with the addition of AR interactive art experiences, the artworks come to life, guiding audiences to experience the fun of ‘Movies x Comics’ in different ways. Through this exhibition, it is hoped that audiences worldwide will discover and enjoy the beautiful and story-rich locations of Hong Kong through the lens of Hong Kong movies and the creations of comics artists.
About the Participating Creators
Kwan-ho CHEUNG (Hong Kong)
Kwan-ho Cheung has published a series of ‘Searching For Views In Hong Kong’ with Hong Kong real cityscapes as its theme. Adopting his established comics drawing techniques, Cheung hopes to set down scenes of Hong Kong which is familiar to you and me. ‘Searching For Views In Hong Kong’ has been well-received, and therefore got invitations for collaborative project from many local entrepreneurs.
In 2018, Cheung founded FIREFLYHK with his friend to launch a selection of comic-related merchandise in collaboration with different creators. In the same year, he published Searching For Views In Hong Kong Vol. 1 featuring drawings of Hong Kong streetscapes. A series of Searching For Views In Hong Kong has started since then. Apart from that, Cheung also hoped to launch a platform that can gather creative units from different mediums of art for a passionate and interesting exchange. Pearl LAW (Hong Kong)
Pearl Law is an illustrator and comic artist based in Hong Kong. She graduated from University of the West of England with a degree in Illustration. Much of her work takes inspiration from humour, literature, history, and behavioural observations. She loves to play around with visual wit and explores the best narrative possible through problem-solving.
Her select clients include Tatler Hong Kong, Louis Vuitton, Design Anthology, etc. For the past two years, her comics have been a part of ShortBox Comics Fair.

YUYI (Hong Kong)
With a background in comic book writing, covering a range of topics including martial arts, romance, dark humour, and absurdity, Hong Kong novelist Yuyi is the author of the acclaimed 2010 crime fiction City of Darkness set in Kowloon Walled City, and the first Hong Kong novelist to receive the Japan International Manga Award for the multi-issue comic adaptation of City of Darkness (original story and screenplay). The action film adaptation Kowloon Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, has received widespread audience and critical acclaim in Hong Kong, China and Japan since its release in May 2024.
Yuyi’s other works include the Z for Zombie series, The Waves of Destiny, Darkness and Light, and Roaring Century 1953–1962. In 2013, Yuyi launched the ‘Creation Cabin’, with its main business focusing on publishing and promoting local creations. To date, it has published over three hundred titles, including comics, novels, children's books, picture books, graphic novels, and more.

Kyutae LEE (South Korea)
Kyutae Lee (a.k.a Kokooma) is a South Korean comic artist, animator and illustrator based in Seoul. He enjoys creating artworks by understanding and expressing matters and spaces. Kyutae creates beautiful and mystical scenes based on South Korean life in his light-handed style, and short animated videos (such as Look Around, 2008). He has illustrated countless Korean book covers and editorial creations, and his technical brilliance speaking for itself. Drawn in by the incredible detail layered into his work – the beautiful scenes appear deceptively hazy at first glance, leading audiences to travel into his love of drawing and the natural world that continues to inspire him.

ZIPCY (South Korea)
Since 2009, ZIPCY has embarked on a dynamic career, starting as an illustrator and gradually expanding her expertise into commercial and fine art.
Her remarkable series 'TOUCH' captures and celebrates the intimacy between lovers. This series has resonated deeply with audiences and cemented ZIPCY's reputation as a visionary as a visionary artist unafraid to explore human connection. She has received worldwide acclaim and has been published in several countries.
She has been involved in commercial art projects, collaborating with companies such as Disney, Netflix and Penguin Books. She has also received significant attention as the art director for the NFT global project SUPER NORMAL, demonstrating her innovative approach and adaptability.

Sungchul JOO (South Korea)
Starting as a film journalist for KINO, passing through FILM 2.0, and working as an editor at CINE21, Sungchul Joo currently works as the editor-in-chief for 'CINEPLAY', an official partner for movie content on NAVER.
Fascinated by Hong Kong movies from a young age, he became a film critic and interviewed numerous Hong Kong filmmakers such as Wong Kar-wai, John Woo, Tsui Hark, Johnnie To, Jackie Chan, Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung, Jet Li, and Donnie Yen. He has written several books related to Hong Kong, including The Time We Loved: The Leslie Cheung Story which focuses on Leslie Cheung, and Those Who Parted Meet Again in Hong Kong which introduces various filming locations in Hong Kong. The Time We Loved: The Leslie Cheung Story has been translated into Chinese and published in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Mainland China.
Sungchul Joo hosted a masterclass with Soi Cheang, the director of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In at the 2024 Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.

Since 1977, the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) has been a platform for nurturing and supporting artists, and infusing art into everyday life. Comix Home Base
Comics and animation are important local pop culture and artistic creations. Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) has been dedicated to planning and organising diverse and unique activities to promote the arts and culture of comics and animation to the local community and abroad.
Since 2006, HKAC curated Comix Home Base project (CHB), and has been working closely with comics artists, animators, industry practitioners and various government departments to promote local works. Over 800 ani-com-related events are hosted, such as exhibitions, talks, workshops, performances, publications, screenings, public arts, etc.
In recent years, Comix Home Base has continued to proactively orchestrate cross-media collaborations and look for crossovers between comics and different media like public art, movie, dance, intangible cultural heritage, martial arts etc., expanding the creative space for comix. Outside Hong Kong, the footprints of Comix Home Base can be found overseas in France, Belgium, Britain, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Japan, Mainland China, Taiwan, China, Singapore, Korea, Russia, Indonesia and Portugal etc. This has facilitated the involvement of numerous Hong Kong comics artists in international collaboration projects. Also, local comics have been successfully published in different foreign versions in European countries and the United States, increasing the international recognition of local comics and animation artists.
Comix Home Base is fully committed to creating a platform for the flourishing art of Hong Kong anime and comics and to elevating comics that are ’made in Hong Kong’ to the global stage with stakeholders.
