Presented by: Hong Kong International Film Festival Society
Cine Fan will take the audience on spiritual journeys through retrospectives of two European master filmmakers, Poland's Wojciech Jerzy Has and Denmark's Carl Theodor Dreyer, in its November/December edition. Their cinematic works embody profound humanity and psychological depth, leaving an enduring mark on the realm of art cinema.
In honour of the centenary of his birth, Poland has declared 2025 the Year of Wojciech Jerzy Has. To pay tribute to the trailblazer, The Existential Voyage of Wojciech Jerzy Has revisits ten of his seminal feature films. From his debut feature, The Noose, Has established an aesthetic style that navigates the boundaries between the real and the surreal. His early acclaimed works, including Farewells and How to Be Loved, crafted a dark vision of Poland's post-war trauma through ill-fated love stories.
The Saragossa Manuscript and The Hourglass Sanatorium, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes, stand as Has's most celebrated masterpieces of magical realism. His dream-within-a-dream structures, interwoven narratives that blur the line between reality and illusion, and hauntingly beautiful imagery have charmed and inspired filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and David Lynch. Resonating with these classics is The Tribulations of Balthazar Kober, a dazzlingly fantastical work that culminated his lifelong cinematic journey.
Dreyer, equally renowned for his extraordinary aesthetic vision, is celebrated as a master among masters. The seven classics selected for the feature programme titled Gazing Into the Soul - Carl Theodor Dreyer reveal how he guards spirituality and humanity with love and faith. From the soul-baring exploration in The Passion of Joan of Arc to the uncanny miracle of Ordet, which won the Golden Lion for Best Film at Venice; from the human betrayal depicted in Michael to the indictment of persecution in Day of Wrath, and the declaration of love and freedom in Gertrud, Dreyer's profound close-ups, minimalist compositions, and measured camera movements have earned reverence from generations of filmmakers.
Martin Scorsese's intricate labyrinth in Shutter Island and Tarsem's fantastical, surreal imagery in The Fall (Restored Cut) resonate across time with Has's cinematic language. Complementing these classics in the Golden Age section are Frank Borzage's Till We Meet Again and Fred Zinnemann's The Nun's Story, featuring Barbara Britton and Audrey Hepburn as novice nuns grappling with inner turmoil while facing divergent destinies.
In tribute to the late Robert Redford, Cine Fan will present two of his seminal works: the Western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the caper The Sting, both created in collaboration with director George Roy Hill and co-star Paul Newman. His striking presence and masterful acting remain utterly captivating.
