Presented by: Hong Kong International Film Festival Society
The Asian premiere of Jafar Panahi's Cannes Palme d'Or winner, It Was Just an Accident, will open this year's Cine Fan Summer International Film Festival (Summer IFF) on 13 August.
A timely morality tale exposing corruption and tyranny through a suspenseful narrative of revenge, It Was Just an Accident is one of the many highlights of Summer IFF, which pays tribute to the acclaimed Iranian master filmmaker with a ten-film retrospective.
The 13-day summer extravaganza will end on 25 August with Kowloon Generic Romance, directed by Ikeda Chihiro and starring Yoshioka Riho and Mizukami Koshi. Adapted from a popular comic series, the film reimagines the long-gone, once anarchic Kowloon Walled City as an alternate universe in a whimsical tale combining nostalgia, mystery, and science fiction. Director Ikeda and Producer Arisawa Ryoya will meet the Hong Kong audience in person after the screenings.
Eddington, marking Ari Aster's debut in the official competition at Cannes, will also have a gala premiere at this year's Summer IFF. Reuniting with Joaquin Phoenix, his star of Beau is Afraid, alongside Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone, the filmmaker of elevated horror presents a satirical take on the Trump presidency infused with pitch-black humour and absurdist violence.
Emerging Taiwanese director Pan Ke-Yin will also be in Hong Kong to engage with the audience at screenings of Family Matters, his directorial debut that offers a nuanced portrayal of an ordinary yet complex family, exploring what constitutes a family and what keeps it together.
The complete Summer IFF 2025 programme will be announced on 29 July. Stay informed through the HKIFFS official website http://cinefan.hkiff.org.hk or on our social media channels.
