Xie Ke, born in Hong Kong in 1955, is a sculptor, painter, designer, curator, and collector active in contemporary Chinese art. After establishing a studio in Beijing, running a gallery in Singapore, and conducting research in Taiwan and Japan, he settled in Hong Kong, dedicating his career to Chinese visual art.
Over fifty years, he has moved fluidly between creation, design, publishing, and curation. His work spans installation, sculpture, painting, and calligraphy. Early years in Singapore built his curatorial experience; his Beijing period focused on pop-inspired works and stainless steel sculpture; recent Hong Kong paintings are more introspective, using line and space to provoke thought. His sculptures blend satire with humor; his paintings are bright and optimistic. Together, they offer cultural critique and reflection.
Maverick 7050: Xie Ke Art and Collection marks “seventy years of life, fifty years of creation.” It traces his formal and conceptual evolution through key works, centering on artistic freedom and the original intent of creation.
Alongside Xie Ke’s own works, the exhibition features about twenty pieces from his collection, including those by Huang Yongyu, Zhao Shaoang, Kan Tai-keung, Li Xiushi, Liu Jude, Yan Ping, Sui Jianguo, Kawaguchi Sei, Wei Xiaoming, Fang Xiang, Shen Jingdong, Pang Yongjie, Yan Yaya, Ma Zelin, Zhao Tianxin, Shen Shubin, Liu Jiahua, and Zhang Zhoujie. These reflect his broad perspective on Chinese contemporary art, his eclectic taste, and his fusion of East and West.
The exhibition affirms Xie Ke’s enduring creative commitment and invites the younger generation to pursue artistic ideals. “The road is long; I will keep searching.” This show shares the power of his art as an encouragement to all.
