A richly poetic work by a Nobel laureate
Juxtaposing past, present and future in an unusual “existence”
Couples of different ages move into a new house. They don’t acknowledge each other but seem to be aware of each other. The house recedes into a haze, time freezes before dissipating into thin air; people’s coming and going make up a rhythm akin to hesitancy in pillow talk. Just when the past and future confront each other in the same space… “he” arrives.
In 2023, Jon Fosse was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for his innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable”. After producing Winter a few seasons ago, the HKRep presents Sleep, another play by the Nobel laureate. Yau Ting Fai returns as director, bringing the audience into the delicate emotions of everyday life beyond mere words, the essence of Fosse’s world.
