‘Writing’ Pictures: Exploring Ancient Chinese Characters

Venue: 10/F, Hong Kong Arts Centre
Date: 2025.01.04 - 2025.02.15
Time: 3:30pm-5:00pm (Every Saturday)
Price: HK$1,980 (HK$100 Materials Fee is included)

Chinese characters are so intriguing because they almost look like pictures, so ‘writing’ them is an art form itself. By exploring characters through the history and artistry of Chinese calligraphy, kids will appreciate this tradition and take pleasure in trying to master it themselves.

Especially designed for children ages 5-12, this course will cover essential tools and techniques and foster skills from basic strokes to complex character structures in an engaging, thematic way.

Using brush, ink and rice paper, students will:

  • Understand the rich history and evolution of Chinese calligraphy, appreciating its cultural significance and aesthetic beauty
  • Grasp the correct techniques of using the tools
  • Develop and progress their calligraphic skills through practice
  • Learn thematically with the categorisation of characters as outlined in “Shuowen Jiezi” — animal and nature-themed, indicative, ideographic, pictophonetic
  • Recognise different calligraphic scripts: Regular, Running, Cursive, Clerical, and Seal

Delve into the aesthetics of ancient Chinese characters — register your child today!
