Join us for a 6-lesson adventure into the world of Chinese calligraphy and painting – no Chinese writing experience needed! Dive into the rich history of ancient characters and their evolution through fun themes like the Animal Series and Indicative Characters Series. Get creative with the Xieyi style of painting as we bring to life vibrant fish, playful shrimp, crabs, delicate orchids, and graceful bamboo.

Using the basic tools of brush, ink and rice paper, students will:

  • Learn the history and development of Chinese calligraphy
  • Recognise different calligraphic scripts: Regular, Running, Cursive, Clerical, and Seal scripts
  • Paint fish, shrimp, and crab to understand the important ecological and economic value of these creatures, as well as their representation of biodiversity
  • Investigate the origins and evolution of animal-themed Chinese characters
  • Learn the basic strokes and structures of ancient scripts (oracle bone script, bronze inscriptions, small seal script)
  • Use freehand Chinese painting to convey the deeper meanings behind the themes of orchid and bamboo, which are two of the "Four Gentlemen" in Chinese culture
  • Investigate the origins and evolution of indicative Chinese characters
