Consensus is the bedrock of blockchain: value is confirmed by participants rather than by a central authority. Curated by Gu Zhenqing, CONSENSUS, a solo exhibition by crypto artist Liu Jiaying (CryptoZR), takes this idea as a lens on works the artist has made with protocols, ledgers and code since 2017.
Fifteen works are on view, including two new installations, along five threads of practice: money as material (ERC20), ownership and meaning (NFT), mechanisms rebuilt on public chains (chains & protocols), galleries and museums in virtual space (metaverse), and the boundary between carbon and silicon (crossover). Highlights include Out of Nothing, 1000EYE, Red and Blue, The Consensus, Small Goal, TopBidder and Silicon Time.
Liu Jiaying (CryptoZR) is a crypto artist and entrepreneur. A former Tencent Global SNS product designer with an MFA in Experimental Art from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and currently an EMBA candidate at CUHK, she has made conceptual art from blockchain's underlying technologies since 2017, and in 2019 introduced "Crypto Art" to China as 加密藝術. She staged the world's first solo exhibition of crypto art at the Guardian Art Center, Beijing (2021), took part in the first Metaverse Biennale at the Arsenale, Venice (2022), and held the solo show Crypto ZR: Arrival at the Saatchi Gallery, London (2023). The Consensus is in the Uli Sigg Collection and Red and Blue is in the collection of the Ulsan Art Museum, Korea.
On the afternoon of the opening day (5 November), the Hong Kong Arts Centre hosts an artist talk, a six-person symposium on Consensus (Gu Zhenqing, Liu Min, Wang Ye, Guo Jinhu, Lin Jiapeng and Liu Jiaying) and the opening ceremony. All events are free and open to the public.
